The story of the meeting between King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba gave rise to traditional love stories about the wise king and the beautiful queen. The story of their love gave birth to their son Manalik, whose name means “son of the wisest man of all”. The love chest is made of clay and contains figurines of a man and woman making love. The chest used to have an important and interesting role in the sex life of traditional Ethiopian culture, which is known for its modesty and inhibition.
The chest is placed by a couple’s bed and serves as implicit communication between spouses. When the man wants to have sexual relations and the woman is permitted to (according to Halacha) he opens the lid of the chest. As long as relations are possible the chest stays open. If the woman is not interested in relations or unable to have them, she closes the chest. The chest actually serves as an efficient means of interpersonal communication between spouses and hints at their sex life.
